This is probably the best and most comprehensive book on Sleep I am yet to come across. The book will hopefully convince you of the importance of sleep, and if you are reading this, it means you believe there is room for improvement. As he says on the Joe Rogan podcast covering Why We Sleep,
“Sleep is the greatest legal performance enhancing drug that most people are probably neglecting”.
In the book you will learn how sleep (or lack thereof) affects you, both physically and mentally, and how you can improve your sleep.
Are you sleep deficient?
Often, we don’t realize we have a problem until we examine specific scenarios. How do you know if you are not getting enough sleep? It boils down to three things:
- Would you wake up on time, refreshed, without an alarm?
- Do you need to keep reading things again because you can’t remember what you just read?
- Do you need coffee in the morning to function?
Should you take Melatonin?
Melatonin is one of two factors that affects your sleepiness. If sleep onset is an issue, a lack of Melatonin could play a part. As we age our ability to produce it begins to decrease. However, there are several other factors that could affect your Melatonin levels, like blue light exposure before bed etc.
Melatonin does not have any effect on sleep quality, so if falling asleep is not the issue, then you don’t need to think about supplementation.
